Novus AI requires certain Discord permissions to interact with your server and provide its configured features.
Most required permissions are requested automatically when you add Novus AI to your Discord server. However, Discord channel or role settings can override these permissions and prevent certain features from working.
Why Does Novus AI Need Permissions?
Novus AI performs different actions depending on the features you enable.
For example, the bot may need to:
View configured Discord channels
Read messages sent by members
Send AI-generated responses
View previous messages when context is required
Send links or formatted responses
Add reactions when required by a feature
Manage messages when moderation features are enabled
Perform configured moderation actions
Access channels used for automatic translation
Novus AI only uses its Discord permissions when required to provide its configured functionality.
Basic Channel Permissions
For Novus AI to provide AI support inside a channel, make sure the bot can:
View the channel
Read messages
Send messages
Read message history
Embed links when required
If any of these permissions are denied at the channel level, Novus AI may be unable to read or respond to member questions.
Channel Permission Overrides
Discord allows individual channels and categories to override server-wide role permissions.
Because of this, Novus AI may work correctly in one channel but fail to respond in another.
If the bot is not responding in a specific channel, check that channel's permissions and make sure the Novus AI bot role is not explicitly denied access.
Also check the parent category permissions if the channel inherits its permissions from a Discord category.
Moderation Permissions
If you enable Novus AI moderation features, additional Discord permissions may be required.
The bot must have the appropriate permissions for any moderation action you expect it to perform.
Discord's role hierarchy also applies to bots. Novus AI cannot perform certain moderation actions against a member whose highest role is equal to or higher than the Novus AI bot role.
For moderation features, position the Novus AI role appropriately in your Discord role hierarchy while only granting the permissions required for the features you use.
Translation Permissions
If Auto Translation is enabled, Novus AI needs access to both the configured source and destination channels.
The bot must be able to read messages from the source channel and send translated messages to the destination channel.
If either channel blocks the bot, automatic translation may not work correctly.
Avoid Giving Unnecessary Administrator Access
Novus AI should be given the permissions required for the features you intend to use.
Administrator permission should not be necessary simply to allow the bot to answer AI support questions.
Using appropriate role and channel permissions gives you better control over where Novus AI can operate inside your Discord server.
If Novus AI Is Not Responding
If the bot has already been installed but does not respond, check the following:
Make sure Novus AI is still a member of your Discord server.
Verify that the Novus AI role can access the configured channel.
Check the channel and category permission overrides.
Make sure the bot can read and send messages in that channel.
Verify that the channel is correctly configured in your Novus AI settings.
Check whether your response settings require the bot to be mentioned.
Make sure the Novus AI role has not been manually restricted.
If Novus AI works in some channels but not others, the issue is usually related to channel permissions or configuration.
Permissions Are Ready
Once Novus AI has the appropriate Discord permissions, you can continue configuring how the bot should operate within your server.
