#4-Configuring Response Behavior

Learn how to control when and where Novus AI responds to Discord messages, including channel availability, mention-based responses, and other response settings that help prevent unwanted AI replies.

Configuring Response Behavior

Response Behavior determines when Novus AI should interact with messages inside your Discord server.

Properly configuring this feature helps ensure that the assistant responds where it is needed without unnecessarily participating in normal community conversations.

How Response Behavior Works

When a member sends a message, Novus AI first checks whether the message meets the conditions configured for your server.

Depending on your settings, these conditions may include:

  • Whether the channel is configured for AI responses

  • Whether Novus AI was directly mentioned

  • Whether the member or channel is allowed to use the AI

  • Whether other configured response conditions are satisfied

Only eligible messages are processed for an AI response.

Configure Your AI Channels

Choose the Discord channels where members should be able to interact with Novus AI.

You may create dedicated channels such as:

  • AI Support

  • Help

  • Questions

  • Technical Support

  • Community Assistance

  • Other support-related channels

Using dedicated AI channels can help keep support conversations organized and prevent Novus AI from responding in unrelated channels.

Mention-Only Responses

Mention-only mode allows you to require members to directly mention Novus AI before the assistant responds.

For example:

@Novus AI How can I reset my account password?

When mention-only behavior is enabled, normal conversations in the channel can continue without triggering the assistant.

This is useful when Novus AI shares a channel with regular member conversations.

Automatic Responses

If your configuration allows responses without a direct mention, Novus AI can process eligible messages posted in configured channels.

This can be useful for dedicated support channels where most messages are expected to be questions for the assistant.

Before using this behavior, make sure the selected channel is intended primarily for AI interaction.

Otherwise, normal conversations may unnecessarily trigger AI requests.

Choose the Right Setup for Each Channel

Different Discord channels may serve different purposes.

A dedicated AI support channel may work well with automatic responses, while a general community channel may be better suited for mention-only interaction.

Plan your configuration around how members actually use your Discord server.

Discord Permissions Still Apply

Response settings do not override Discord permissions.

Even when a channel is correctly configured in Novus AI, the assistant still needs permission to access that channel.

Make sure Novus AI can:

  • View the channel

  • Read messages

  • Send messages

  • Read message history

Channel and category permission overrides can prevent the assistant from responding.

Response Behavior and AI Routing

Response Behavior and AI Routing perform different tasks.

Response Behavior determines whether Novus AI should process a message.

AI Routing determines how an eligible message should be handled after it is received.

For example, a member may ask a question in an enabled support channel. Response Behavior allows Novus AI to process the message, while AI Routing can determine whether it belongs to general support, technical assistance, purchases, or another configured route.

Avoid Unnecessary AI Requests

Every message processed by your AI provider may contribute to your provider's API usage.

For busy Discord communities, allowing Novus AI to process every conversation may create unnecessary requests.

Consider using:

  • Dedicated AI channels

  • Mention-only responses

  • Clearly defined support areas

  • Appropriate channel configuration

This can provide a cleaner Discord experience while also reducing unnecessary AI provider usage.

Testing Response Behavior

After changing your response settings, test them directly inside Discord.

Try the following:

  1. Send a message in an enabled AI channel.

  2. Send a message in a channel that is not configured for AI responses.

  3. Mention Novus AI directly.

  4. Send a normal message without mentioning the bot.

  5. Test using a regular member account if possible.

Verify that Novus AI responds only under the conditions you intended.

If Novus AI Responds Where It Shouldn't

If the assistant is responding in an unwanted channel:

  1. Review your configured AI channels.

  2. Check whether automatic responses are enabled.

  3. Consider enabling mention-only behavior.

  4. Review any channel-specific configuration.

  5. Save your changes and test again.

If Novus AI Does Not Respond

If the assistant does not respond where expected:

  1. Verify that the channel is enabled or configured for Novus AI.

  2. Check whether mention-only mode is enabled.

  3. Mention Novus AI if required.

  4. Verify the bot's Discord permissions.

  5. Check the Discord category and channel permission overrides.

  6. Make sure your AI provider is working.

  7. Verify that your server configuration is active.

  8. Test again after saving any changes.

Finding the Right Balance

There is no single response configuration that works for every Discord community.

Smaller communities may prefer automatic responses in dedicated support channels, while larger communities may prefer more controlled interaction.

Configure Novus AI based on how your members communicate and adjust the settings as your community grows.

Next Step

Now that you have configured when Novus AI should respond, the next step is configuring how the assistant handles members who communicate in different languages.
