Channel Configuration Overview

#2-Configuring Channel Response Modes

Learn how to configure when Novus AI should respond inside your Discord channels, including automatic and mention-only response behavior, and choose the right mode for different types of community channels.

Configuring Channel Response Modes

Channel Response Modes control when Novus AI should respond to messages inside an AI-enabled Discord channel.

Not every channel should behave the same way.

A dedicated AI support channel may benefit from automatic responses, while a busy community channel may be better configured so Novus AI responds only when a member intentionally mentions it.

Choosing the appropriate response mode helps prevent unwanted AI replies while keeping assistance easy to access.

Why Response Modes Matter

Discord servers contain different types of conversations.

In a dedicated support channel, most messages may be questions intended for Novus AI.

In a general community channel, members may simply be talking to each other.

Without the appropriate response behavior, Novus AI could unnecessarily process conversations that were never intended for the assistant.

Response Modes help you control this behavior.

Automatic Response Mode

Automatic Response Mode allows Novus AI to process eligible member messages without requiring the bot to be mentioned.

For example:

Member:
Where can I download the client?

Novus AI:
Provides the appropriate answer using your configured Knowledge Base and AI behavior.

The member does not need to type @Novus AI.

This mode works best when most messages in the channel are expected to be directed toward the assistant.

When to Use Automatic Responses

Automatic responses are commonly useful for:

  • Dedicated AI support channels
  • Ask-AI channels
  • Help desk channels
  • FAQ channels where members ask questions
  • Dedicated troubleshooting channels
  • Other channels primarily intended for AI assistance

For example, if you create:

#ai-support

members can simply type their questions naturally.

This creates a more convenient support experience.

Mention-Only Response Mode

Mention-Only Response Mode requires a member to directly mention Novus AI before the assistant processes the message.

For example:

Member:
@Novus AI How do I create an account?

Novus AI can respond because the member intentionally invoked the assistant.

However:

Member:
Does anyone want to join the event later?

Novus AI does not need to respond because it was not mentioned.

When to Use Mention-Only Responses

Mention-only behavior is useful for:

  • General chat channels
  • Community discussions
  • Shared support channels
  • Busy public channels
  • Channels where AI assistance is optional
  • Channels where members primarily communicate with each other

This allows Novus AI to remain available without interfering with normal conversations.

Automatic vs. Mention-Only

The best mode depends on the purpose of the channel.

Automatic Response

Best when messages are generally intended for Novus AI.

Mention-Only

Best when Novus AI shares the channel with normal member conversations.

For example:

#ai-support
Automatic Response

#general-chat
Mention-Only

This creates a clear distinction between dedicated AI assistance and optional AI interaction.

You Can Use Different Modes Across Channels

You do not need to use the same Response Mode for every AI-enabled channel.

For example:

AI Support

Automatic responses.

Technical Help

Automatic responses if the channel is specifically intended for support.

General Chat

Mention-only responses.

Community Discussion

Mention-only responses.

Configure each channel according to how members actually use it.

Choosing the Correct Mode

Before selecting a Response Mode, ask:

  1. Are most messages in this channel intended for Novus AI?
  2. Do members normally talk to each other here?
  3. Would automatic AI responses interrupt conversations?
  4. Should members intentionally invoke the assistant?
  5. Is this channel specifically designed for support?

If the channel exists primarily for Novus AI, automatic responses are usually appropriate.

If AI assistance is only an optional part of the channel, mention-only behavior may be better.

Response Mode Does Not Change AI Knowledge

Changing the Response Mode does not change what Novus AI knows.

Your Knowledge Base remains responsible for factual information.

Your AI Instructions remain responsible for general behavior.

Your AI Routes remain responsible for specialized handling.

Response Mode only determines whether a message is eligible to trigger the AI based on how the member interacts with it.

Response Mode Does Not Replace AI Routing

Response Mode and AI Routing happen at different stages.

For example:

Member:
@Novus AI My launcher keeps crashing.

First, the channel configuration determines whether the message is eligible.

If the channel requires a mention, the mention satisfies that requirement.

The message can then continue to AI Routing.

AI Routing may identify the concern as Technical Support.

The appropriate Route Instructions and Knowledge Base information can then be used.

Mentions in Follow-Up Conversations

Members may continue asking follow-up questions after Novus AI responds.

Depending on your configured response behavior, they may still need to mention the assistant when using a mention-only channel.

For example:

Member:
@Novus AI How do I install the client?

After receiving an answer:

Member:
@Novus AI What if the launcher still doesn't open?

Using the required mention ensures that the follow-up is intentionally directed toward Novus AI.

Avoid Automatic Responses in Very Busy Channels

Automatic responses in a busy general chat can result in Novus AI processing many messages that were not intended as questions.

This can lead to:

  • Unwanted responses
  • AI interrupting member conversations
  • Increased AI provider usage
  • Increased token consumption
  • Higher API usage
  • More unnecessary processing

Mention-only behavior is often more suitable for these channels.

Consider AI Usage

Every eligible message may require AI processing depending on your configuration.

Enabling automatic responses in highly active channels can significantly increase usage.

When configuring Response Modes, consider both the member experience and your AI provider usage.

Dedicated AI channels provide an easy way to control this.

Don't Use Mention-Only Everywhere Without a Reason

Mention-only behavior provides more control, but it is not always the best choice.

In a channel specifically named:

#ask-novus-ai

requiring members to mention the bot every time may create unnecessary extra steps.

If the purpose of the channel is already clear, automatic responses may provide a better experience.

Test Automatic Response Mode

After enabling automatic responses, send a normal question without mentioning Novus AI.

For example:

Where can I find the rules?

Verify that Novus AI responds.

Then send a few realistic messages to confirm that the behavior matches the purpose of the channel.

Test Mention-Only Response Mode

After enabling mention-only behavior, first send a message without mentioning Novus AI.

For example:

Where can I find the rules?

Novus AI should not automatically respond based solely on the message if a mention is required.

Then send:

@Novus AI Where can I find the rules?

Verify that the assistant processes the request.

Test Normal Conversations

For shared community channels, test messages that are clearly conversations between members.

For example:

Anyone joining the event tonight?

Good game everyone.

I'll be online later.

If the channel uses mention-only behavior and Novus AI is not mentioned, these conversations should remain uninterrupted.

Changing a Response Mode

Your channel behavior does not need to remain permanent.

If you initially configure automatic responses but discover that Novus AI is participating too frequently, you can change the channel to mention-only behavior.

Similarly, if a channel becomes dedicated entirely to AI support, you may decide that automatic responses are more appropriate.

Adjust your configuration as your community usage changes.

Recommended Setup

A simple Discord setup could look like:

Dedicated AI Support Channel

Response Mode: Automatic

Purpose: Members can ask Novus AI questions directly without mentioning it.

General Community Channel

Response Mode: Mention-Only

Purpose: Members normally talk to each other but can mention Novus AI when they need assistance.

Announcements

Novus AI not enabled.

Purpose: Information-only channel where AI interaction is unnecessary.

This provides a good balance between accessibility and control.

Troubleshooting Response Modes

If Novus AI does not respond as expected, check:

  1. Whether the channel is enabled for Novus AI.
  2. Whether the correct Response Mode is selected.
  3. Whether the configuration was saved.
  4. Whether a mention is required.
  5. Whether Novus AI was correctly mentioned.
  6. Whether the bot can view the channel.
  7. Whether the bot can send messages.
  8. Whether Discord category permissions are blocking access.
  9. Whether your AI provider configuration is active.

If Novus AI responds when it should not, verify that the correct channel and Response Mode are configured.

Keep the Member Experience Simple

Your Response Mode should make it obvious how members can interact with Novus AI.

If a channel requires mentions, consider making that clear in the channel description or support instructions.

If a channel automatically responds, make its AI support purpose clear so members understand that their messages may be processed by Novus AI.

A predictable interaction model creates a better experience for both members and staff.

Next Step

Now that you can control when Novus AI responds in each channel, the next step is understanding how channel configuration works together with Discord permissions and what to check when the bot cannot access or respond in a configured channel.
